17 Aug National nonprofit day
Today, National Nonprofit Day, recognizes the efforts nonprofits and charities put into making an impact in their communities. In 2019, Natalie, CEO and creative director of Alabama Chanin, continued her commitment to textiles and community by founding Project Threadways.
We are a nonprofit that records, studies, and explores the history of textiles. Through our work, we seek to understand and document the impact that textiles and their creation had on our local community, the region of the American south, the nation, and finally at the global level—connecting the people, places, and materials throughout the process.
Founded as a 501(c)(3), we utilize the experience of Alabama Chanin and Natalie’s vision through academic partnerships and programing with the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture. Whether academic, financial, or creative, we seek partners to help us further the collection of stories and scholarship to help preserve the past while creating a common future across our region and nation. Donations fund all work of Project Threadways including operating costs, academic scholarship projects, and public education initiatives. Find out how to support our work here.
Over the years, Alabama Chanin has collaborated with, supported, and been supported by countless organizations with a range of missions and who are located in our community and beyond. Learn more about each of them through the links below or find similar organizations in your area to support. The challenges of the last year have amplified the need for many, and we seek to help others whenever we can.
