Placemaking Through Textiles
April 21, 2023
4:30 p.m. | Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts
5:45 p.m. | Pope’s Tavern Museum and Pickett Place
Join us on April 21, 2023, as we invite the community around Florence, Alabama, and beyond to explore and reckon with the Shoals’ history of cotton production and manufacturing and tell a collective story of the region.
The program will begin with a presentation by Dr. Katie Knowles, a scholar of textiles, clothing, U.S. slavery, and African American history, at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts (217 East Tuscaloosa Street). Following the presentation is a specially curated, limited-time exhibition at Pope’s Tavern Museum (203 Hermitage Drive). From there, we invite attendees to enjoy a casual dinner across the street at Pickett Place, catered by Soul Wingery.
This programming is free and open to the public with registration. Limited seats are available.
The Placemaking Through Textiles program is part of the 2023 Project Threadways Symposium and is made possible through support from the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and the Alabama Humanities Alliance, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, the Alabama Humanities Alliance, or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
